Three Canyons

La Semilla and Three Canyons are replenishing the grasslands at Three Canyons by:

  • Building roads that catch storm runoff and bar ditches that channel it into water-holding swales
  • Repairing existing ponds, digging new ones to slow and hold large amounts of run off, and using the displaced earth as fill for roadways to prevent erosion where washes cross roads—using culverts, gabions, and weirs to raise roads above the wash bottom
  • Clearing invasive exotics and smaller mesquites, reseeding cleared areas with native grasses
  • Using cleared mesquite to build weirs to slow storm runoff where roads change grade, allowing the water to soak into the ground and feed erosion-preventive native flora
  • Reseeding native species and increasing the variety and quantity to provide cover and food for wildlife
  • Enhancing wildlife corridors with watering sites that will restore native woody vegetation and offer cover for animals
  • Teaching people, residents, and locals, about the regeneration process so they can be watchful stewards of these renewed grasslands
